Bangladesh-China Collaboration Poised to Elevate Medical Tourism through New Friendship Hospital

January 17, 2026

< Back

A significant healthcare infrastructure project in Bangladesh, supported by China, is set to enhance regional medical services and establish the nation as an emerging healthcare destination. On January 18 in Dhaka, Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen and National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman discussed progress on the proposed Bangladesh–China Friendship General Hospital. This initiative aims to reduce the need for patients to seek treatment abroad or travel to major cities, fostering new avenues for regional medical tourism. Both parties underscored the project's timely implementation as a symbol of their enduring friendship.

A New Hub for Quality Care and Patient Travel

The forthcoming 1,000-bed Bangladesh–China Friendship General Hospital in Nilphamari will be a state-of-the-art facility offering advanced, specialized medical services. It intends to serve local residents and those in surrounding districts, alleviating pressure on existing hospitals in Dhaka and Rangpur. Such high-quality, affordable treatment is expected to attract international patients, strengthening Bangladesh's potential as a medical tourism destination.

The Ministry of Health has directed preparation of a master plan and cost estimates, with an "urgent" notice issued to the Public Works Ministry on October 30 for project advancement. Estimated at Tk1,480 crore and fully grant-funded, this project is targeted for completion by 2028 on a 25-acre site near the Darwani Textile Mill in Charaikhola Union, Nilphamari Sadar upazila, along the Saidpur–Nilphamari road.

Bottom Line
