Benjamin Mkapa Hospital Spearheads Tanzania's Medical Tourism Ambitions with Malawi Partnership

January 15, 2026

< Back

Tanzania is strategically positioning itself as a leading regional healthcare destination. The Benjamin Mkapa Hospital (BMH) spearheads this through a new partnership with Malawi, initiating the nation's 2026 foreign policy on medical tourism.

Deepening Cross-Border Healthcare

In January, Malawi’s Minister of Health and Sanitation, Madalitso Baloyi, led a delegation to BMH in Dodoma, cementing a cross-border healthcare commitment. This alliance offers Malawian patients specialized medical services at BMH, a more affordable and proximate alternative. Minister Baloyi stated, "In the previous years we were referring our patients to India and other European countries but with this partnership, we will now be bringing them to BMH to access similar services at a more affordable cost." This aligns with President Samia Suluhu Hassan's medical diplomacy call, supporting Tanzania's ambition as a regional hub for specialized care and health tourism. Malawi was impressed by BMH's advanced services and digital health system.

Collaborative Framework

The partnership was initiated by BMH Executive Director Prof Abel Makubi, Malawi's Permanent Secretary Dr Dan Namarika, and Tanzania's ambassador Agnes Kayora. BMH specialists visited Kamuzu Hospital (Lilongwe), Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Blantyre), Zomba, and Mzuzu. Collaboration focuses on medical tourism support, professional capacity building (training), and experience/research exchange. Prof Makubi invited other East, Central, and South African countries to access BMH's quality, international-standard services.

Bottom Line

This partnership signifies a crucial development in regional cross-border healthcare:

  1. Enhanced Patient Access: Malawian patients gain access to high-quality, cost-effective specialized care regionally.

  2. Tanzania's Medical Tourism Growth: The initiative solidifies Tanzania's role as an emerging healthcare destination under its national foreign policy.

  3. Regional Integration: It promotes stronger healthcare collaboration and shared expertise within East Africa.
