The Strategic Convergence of Sports and Wellness in Modern Patient Travel

February 24, 2026

< Back

The landscape of global travel is undergoing a significant transformation, with recent data indicating a profound shift in how individuals, particularly those from the U.S., plan their journeys. This evolution is increasingly influenced by personal passions, specifically sports and wellness, which are now foundational elements dictating travel choices. A comprehensive new report from Priority Pass, a flagship program of Collinson Group, reveals how these passion-driven pursuits are not merely influencing leisure trips but are also reshaping the broader travel ecosystem, including potential implications for the patient travel sector.

The study highlights that a quarter of U.S. travelers (25%) embark on trips primarily for sporting events, while nearly one-third (32%) actively combine sports and wellness activities during their travels. This trend is especially pronounced among younger demographics, with a notable 55% of younger sports enthusiasts motivated to explore new healthcare destinations and cities through their athletic interests. As travelers craft itineraries around these significant personal moments, the entire journey, starting from the airport experience, becomes an integral part of the overall engagement. To delve deeper into this burgeoning phenomenon, we engaged with Sheryl Pflaum, Global Chief Advisory Officer and Executive Chair, The Americas at Collinson Group, who offered valuable perspectives on the factors propelling the surge in sports and wellness-focused travel leading up to 2026.

The Evolving Landscape of Travel Motivation

According to Sheryl Pflaum, Global Chief Advisory Officer and Executive Chair, The Americas at Collinson Group, there is a distinct redefinition of travel's inherent value among American consumers. She observes, "We’re seeing a clear shift in how Americans define the value of travel. It’s no longer just about where you go, it’s about why you go and how the experience makes you feel. Sports and wellness travel sit at the intersection of emotion, identity, and self-care. Live sports offer energy, connection, and unforgettable moments, while wellness provides balance, recovery, and mental reset. For me personally, some of my most meaningful travel has been tied to wellness through cycling vacations while also taking in stages of the Tour de France. Those trips are physically demanding and require strength and endurance, but they also create space to disconnect mentally and reset.”

This intentionality in travel planning has intensified following periods of global disruption and widespread burnout. Pflaum further notes, “After several years of disruption and burnout, travelers are far more intentional. They want trips that feel meaningful, restorative, and worth their time. Sports and wellness deliver exactly that, high-impact experiences that align with personal passions and well-being.” This perspective underscores a fundamental change where travelers prioritize experiences that offer profound personal resonance and contribute to their overall well-being.

The report also introduces the concept of an "age of passion pursuits," characterizing how contemporary travelers approach trip planning. Pflaum elaborates on this paradigm shift: “Instead of starting with a destination, travelers are starting with an interest, a major game, a marathon, a music or sports festival, or a wellness retreat, or even a personal passion and building the trip around it. Nearly half of sports travelers globally say discovering new cities through sports is a primary motivator. Travel planning today starts with the passion/interest first, and everything else, flights, hotels, airport experiences follows from there.” This highlights a significant opportunity for healthcare destinations to align their offerings with these passion-driven itineraries, potentially attracting international patients seeking specialized care alongside their chosen pursuits.

The Rise of Sports-Driven Patient Travel

Current research indicates that one in four U.S. travelers (25%) journeys specifically to engage with sports. Pflaum emphasizes the potent emotional appeal of live sporting events, which foster a sense of community and deliver unique experiences that digital platforms cannot replicate. She states, “We’re seeing strong momentum around major league games, international tournaments, and college sports. For many people, attending a game or tournament isn’t just entertainment; it’s a bucket-list moment tied to personal passion and identity.” This deep connection to sports offers a compelling angle for healthcare providers to consider when targeting patient travel, particularly for individuals who might combine elective procedures or health screenings with attending a major event.

Specific sports serve as significant motivators for U.S. patient travel. Pflaum details the leading drivers: “In the U.S., American Football is the leading driver of sports-related travel, with 65% of sports travelers citing it as a key motivator, followed by basketball at 46% and baseball at 38%. Sports travel today isn’t just about attending a game; it’s about being part of a larger cultural moment, often tied to identity, community, and shared experience, like the 2026 FIFA World Cup across North America.” This data suggests that the allure of major sporting events can significantly influence a patient's choice of healthcare destination, especially for those seeking quality of care in conjunction with cultural immersion. Notably, younger demographics, including Gen Z and Millennials, are particularly drawn to sports travel, valuing authentic, shareable, and emotionally impactful experiences.

Expanding Horizons in Wellness Tourism

The data further indicates a broader, more integrated definition of wellness travel today, extending far beyond traditional spa services. Hotels and resorts are now providing an extensive array of wellness activities and treatments. According to Pflaum, “It’s no longer just about spa treatments; it’s about mental health, emotional well-being, and creating space to disconnect.” This expanded scope presents significant opportunities for the health tourism industry to offer comprehensive packages that cater to a patient's holistic well-being.

A substantial 43% of U.S. travelers indicate that wellness is a primary motivation for their trips, with half of global wellness travelers (50%) specifically seeking mental health and emotional healing, rather than solely conventional spa offerings. Pflaum explains the modern facets of wellness travel: “Today’s wellness travel includes nature immersion, mindfulness practices, sleep optimization, digital detoxing, and recovery-focused experiences woven throughout the trip.” This diverse approach means that the concept of wellness travel is highly individualized, reflecting varied needs and preferences among international patients seeking restorative experiences.

Synergies: Integrating Sports and Wellness for Holistic Patient Journeys

Intriguingly, the research highlights a growing trend of travelers actively combining sports and wellness within the same trip. Pflaum notes, “Our research shows that 32% of U.S. travelers combine sports and wellness within the same trip, reflecting a desire to balance excitement with recovery. After the intensity of a live sporting event, many are actively building in recovery moments, whether that’s a spa visit, sleep-focused accommodations, meditation, or simply slowing down. They want the thrill of the experience but also want to return home feeling restored rather than depleted. In this way, sports and wellness naturally complement each other: one delivers adrenaline, the other sustains long-term well-being.”

This integration offers a compelling blueprint for healthcare destinations and providers. By offering specialized medical tourism packages that allow international patients to attend a major sporting event while also incorporating pre- or post-event wellness and recovery programs, providers can enhance the overall patient experience. This approach acknowledges the patient's desire for both stimulating experiences and a focus on long-term health and recuperation, thereby elevating the quality of care and patient satisfaction.

Bottom Line

The evolving motivations of U.S. travelers, driven by a desire for passion-fueled experiences and holistic well-being, present a significant strategic opportunity for the medical and health tourism sectors. Key takeaways for industry stakeholders include:

  1. Prioritizing Experiential Value: Travelers are increasingly seeking trips that resonate emotionally and contribute to their self-care. Healthcare providers and destinations should develop offerings that integrate seamlessly with these deeper motivations, moving beyond purely clinical services.

  2. Leveraging Sports as a Gateway: Major sporting events act as powerful magnets for patient travel, particularly among younger demographics. Creating patient travel packages that align with significant games, tournaments, or athletic pursuits can attract international patients seeking specialized care in conjunction with these events.

  3. Broadening Wellness Offerings: Modern wellness tourism encompasses mental health, emotional healing, and diverse recovery-focused activities. Healthcare destinations should expand their wellness programs to include nature immersion, digital detox, and sleep optimization to cater to a wider array of international patients.

  4. Promoting Integrated Journeys: The synergy between sports and wellness offers a unique value proposition. Medical tourism providers can design comprehensive programs that combine the excitement of sports with restorative wellness components, ensuring patients return home feeling both fulfilled and rejuvenated, thus enhancing the overall quality of care.

  5. Targeting Younger Demographics: Gen Z and Millennials are leading this shift towards passion-driven and integrated travel. Marketing efforts should focus on authentic, shareable, and emotionally meaningful experiences to capture this growing segment of potential international patients.

This strategic alignment with evolving traveler preferences can unlock new avenues for growth and differentiation within the competitive cross-border healthcare market.
